While you may think an asana class is hard, sitting down quietly with stillness is much harder than it sounds or seems! Asanas are the postures practiced in yoga. These yoga postures help us to develop discipline and concentration and are meant to help us master the body in order to sit still for long periods of time in meditation. Asanas can be chosen specifically for musculoskeletal conditions that you want to manage(eg low back pain, knee pain, etc). It can also be chosen to target towards kicking a habit away. If you wan to help improve your visceral organs to function better, certain asana and breathing techniques allows you to help improve by increasing oxygen in your body, increasing movement in the visceral organs to achieve increased functions. There are a few main types of asana classes that you might stumble upon and wondering if they are considered an asana class:
  • Yin
  • Hatha
  • Vinyasa
  • Ashtanga
  • Flow
  • Iyengar

As you can see from the above, most of the classes above teaches most if not all of the twists or rotations, forward bends, so any yoga related classes that teaches any form of posture is considered an asana class, it just depends then on what type of asana class appeals to you most.
For most of us as we know it, asana classes are just a form of exercise, which leads to a much deeper sense of fulfilment when you are trying to fill that void in your life.
