Air compression for recovery

What is Air Compression Therapy?

ACT is similar to compression stockings, legging or socks, in which they provide to aim improvement of the signs & symptoms of various conditions associated with venous conditions by providing graduated compression. This helps channel, minimise, & control any form of discomfort caused by the initial swelling in the affected area. They assist with circulation & introduction of nutrient rich blood to wherever you are applying the compression, & release of it.

The air compression therapy is non-invasive and mostly safe to use with general instructions to take note of. People with lymphedema must go for an initial consult with both physician & the lymphedema specialist to see if there would be any contraindications to using it, along with people with heart conditions that to always seek medical clearance for air compression therapy.

When can i use ACT?

A general guideline / baseline is that it's best used for :
  • Muscle soreness from working out,
  • Aches from over use with activities such as walking or long standing & so on
  • Help with increasing general lymphatic flow
  • Induce deep rest/ relaxation.

What to wear from the session?

Long loose/ comfortable pants! No jeans or anything like that, yoga leggings and the such is great as well.

How long is the session?

A typical session would last anywhere from 10-20 minutes depending on your state and pressure of the machine.

What body parts can i use it on?

  • Trunk
  • Legs(bilateral)
  • Arms(unilateral)

When is a bad time or situation to use ACT?

While it's generally safe to use whenever, there is certain possibilities in timings / scenarios when you shouldn't use it:
  • Post Flight (within 16 hours) Your body needs to stabilise and adapt from the change in pressure from high to low & for some people it takes faster(as soon as you land to stabilise) & for some it takes slower up to 12 hours to have the pressure changes internally stabilise back to our normal resting pressure.
  • Post surgery(scar tissue not fully healed) Using the ACT can severely open up your scar and cause extreme pain as you can imagine if a scar open up.
