 What is a breathwork class?
Breathwork class is a type of grounding practice in group sessions that allow each individual to consciously change their own biochemistry, & biomechanics of their being with breath manipulation. Classes are usually lead by breathwork therapists that will take you through different phases, types of breathing techniques. A breath work session may take a focus on a specific theme such as self-care, self-awareness, stress and anxiety, forgiveness, etc. All of the breathwork sessions involves you to consciously change how you breath, & allow a higher uptake of oxygen, & bring the body to rest & digest(parasympathetic response).
While breath work seems like a new thing that's catching up, it's actually derived/ borrowed from one of the yoga practice know as pranayama(which is referred to as the life force) where practitioners use different breathing techniques to help improve focus, deepen meditation, improve the clarity of mind, & ultimately improve quality of life with the body having to experience a balanced state of mind-body. Each breathwork sessions may be catered differently depending on the time of the practice(morning, afternoon, evening), as some of the breathing exercises can help to increase/ improve energy, lower heart rate, or increase self-awareness. Breathwork for some people are life-changing, find a facilitator that facilitates a breathwork session that allow you to dive deeper into relaxation & introspection, with all the benefits in tact for you to experience in your life. Is a breath work class a meditation session?
While meditation classes are mostly passive, done with closed eyes, breathwork therapy/ practice undoubtedly changes the energy, breaths, & mental state of mind through manipulation of each breath (conscious energy breathing). During meditation, we change the brain waves by focusing into a relaxed manner, in the same way, breath practices help change any breathing pattern that requires anyone to come out of(shallow, hyperventilating, etc). Our advice to people who can't meditate sitting quietly as some people get anxiety just thinking of the practice during classes, to practice breathwork techniques. Breathwork therapy techniques helps shift one's mind off & dive deeper into meditation(mindfulness), & improves focus, & overall health by being able to saturate your body with higher amounts of oxygen in your cells. Breathwork can be approached by both sides of the coin from meditation/ mindfulness or for all the physical aspects, so if you are trying to pick up meditation but can't sit down quietly, breathwork is for you, & if you are wanting to improve how you breath better for health/ wellbeing reasons, breathwork, is for you. How does the 4 7 8 breathing trick work?
The first number is breathing in, the second to hold, the last number is exhaling. If you practice breathwork session or have access to this type of guide to breathwork, that's amazing, as this helps you slow down the energy, resting, & brings your mind, & body to the rest & digest(parasympathetic response). Type of breaths manipulation(breathwork) that emphasises the exhales would have a long list of benefits which include the underlooked vagus nerve. The vagus nerve is responsible for control of the heart, lungs, & digestive tract.
How long should you do breathwork?
A piece of advice from all our breath work facilitators, if you're starting to do any form of breath work, to start with 5-10 minutes without any breath-holding, work your way up to 30 mins, & be linger around the 45 minutes practice. However, if you're in a class for breathwork with a qualified/ experienced facilitator, you would be just fine as most of the time, different phases, & techniques that you are taken through would give you ample time to pace yourself under guidance. Breathwork session such as holotropic breathwork or clarity breathwork are longer than the typical session(60 mins), they go through phases
Can you overdo breathwork?
People don't realise that even breathwork can be overdone! A simple piece of advice is to always keep in moderation as some breathwork techniques are mean to be done every now & then, & factors in the environment such as night or day time, etc. While breathwork access is growing, facilitators are not robustly trained in experiences, techniques, methods, & types of breath dysfunctions, & this can lead to more physical/ mental health conditions than what breathwork was intended to be. This usually happens to be the case when they attend one certification course & use that for almost every person without the diversity, & knowledge of other approaches. When you attend a breathwork class, it's important to understand that while it could be challenging, no breathwork session should ever be stressful. The side effect of wrong techniques done can be detrimental, you honestly wouldn't know if you're being taught the right or wrong content of breathwork class to be honest, however, keep in mind that when people do breathwork practises, some people faint, & which is not something normal!
