You are either in pain & looking for a good reputable Chiropractic physician or you believe that taking care of your spine is essential to your wellbeing. Either way, even if it's not mentioned on the reasons why you're looking for a chiropractor, you for one, are looking for someone trusted and reputable to help you with your body and well-being. Read the 5 things you need to know to look for in a chiropractor for the best and most reputable chiropractors in Singapore!
We at MSMC believe that in order to find a reputable chiropractor, you need to ensure that they have enough experience with treating and seeing patients that are out of their comfort zone. Which means, they see not only spinal conditions such as herniated discs, or more commonly known as slip disc, and that they are able to see patients from all sorts of conditions to frozen shoulder, knee pain, expecting mums, kids, sporting athletes and so on. It's a big myth that chiros are only able to treat spinal conditions, they are equipped with the same health sciences on anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and musculoskeletal knowledge with being a chiropractic physician! What makes them different is the principles of treatment towards a patient that walks in with pain. Chiropractor believe that the body's health needs a healthy spine, as it is, the spine is the innervation(control room)to everything in us, from the visceral organs(inside our stomach), to the muscles, and our sexual organs, which may be affected if the spine is not in the best alignment(s), which again would be affected by the muscles!
1. ART (active release technique)
ART is a form of modality that facilitate healing by hands-on manipulation of the soft tissues with adding movements while manipulation. The technique used can help with increasing range of motion, fibrotic tissue(scar tissue) and tendon conditions. ART can be used almost anywhere on the body wherever the practitioner can access. Look for those who are trained in it as it takes at least one year of practise to get an expert badge and by then, you are ensuring that the services you engage with the chiropractic physician, is well paid for. Just like you paying for an artist's work that costs $5000, which took 5 minutes. It's not the amount of time in that five minutes to produce the art, but the years that took him to produce the art in 5 minutes.
2. Exercise & Movement prescription
Spinal, joint, tendon, or any soft tissue manipulation without a prescription of exercise or movement is the same as going through the treatment sessions halfway and then re starting it when you get pain from the same injury you came in for. Exercise & movement education is key to locking in and stabilising the joints or connective tissues to allow full healing and lessen the chances of injury to the affected area. Not all chiropractors are made equal, much the same with them prescribing movement & exercise to the treatment, as it takes another bunch of specialty knowledge & skills to be able to manage the injury with chiropractic care. Soft tissue manipulations or mobilisations is only 10 percent of the work to help you fully recover and increase your well-being, and the rest of 90 percent lies in ensuring that your body now moves better and making sure that the body is more supple for loading and be able to move pain free. Find a chiropractor that either is competent in prescribing you the home work with or without them, or the one that works closely with exercise professionals that have been working with their patients directly and that they personally trust. This is important to know that if they refer out to someone that isn't working on their patients for exercise management, then most probably they are not willing to bear the responsibility should anything happen, it's like asking if the chefs ever eat their food, only trust those who does!
4. Elephant ears
If you look for a chiro, find one that has elephant ears, the ones that listen more, than talk, as you are there for your pains, problems, and you're the one looking for solutions. Unless of course they are trying to explain and advise you what to do, but otherwise, they should be listening more to understand your frustrations and how you hope to find a solution by choosing to see a chiropractor right? Listening allows the practitioner to understand your mental state of mind and to help them trouble shoot what may be causing your pain and so on.
Know anyone who's paid thousands of dollars for chiropractic sessions in advance? We sure do. Is it necessary? Maybe not, maybe yes. It depends on what and why you are signing up for so many sessions throughout the packages, if you have been told that you need 6 months of adjustments, then you most probably want to look for a chiropractor who advices on a whole lifestyle changes rather than just spinal adjustments. Our body don't only need adjustments, it needs movement re-education and re-patterning, in other words, exercise as a lifestyle intervention to help with long term treatment or management of your condition.
