Far from it, we often times are taught to look at the whole body as a unit, or so to speak a whole being, which encompasses a whole host of systems & sub systems such as the lymphatic system, nervous system, muscular, & so on. We work closely with the nervous system of a client by feeling tension locally or globally, just by touching. We then apply certain techniques to help improve the neurological firing sequences as the body always goes through compensations but people also miss the fact that the nervous system is also being "adjusted". Strength training solely dedicates most of the times physically or more for aesthetic rather than the aspect of a Functional stretch therapist which helps cover a range of systems as mentioned above.

For general overall health & maintenance, stretch therapy should be at least twice weekly as this would include some stretching exercise to help strengthen certain areas. Specific stretch exercise can help with prevention of an old yet frequently injured are, or a prevention for sporting activity.

Is sports massage similar to Functional stretch therapy?

Sports massage therapists are taught to apply more compression to the soft tissues, on the other hand, we are taught to work on the brain to allow a decompression of the joints during any session before even working on the muscles. We ar more concerned about movement & being pain free thus our sessions are totally on the other spectrum of approach. You will always be fully clothed & during stretch therapy session, we hardly use compression on your body. Functional stretch therapy also targets the deep tendons & ligaments to help with posture, pain or movement dysfunction(s). Stretches/ techniques are as well gentle with most clients saying that it makes them relax into the session quickly(which i like as it allows me to do my thing). During some of the session exercises can be incorporated to help with treatment/therapy session.

How often should you do stretch therapy?

Highly recommended that professional athletes seek for regular sessions at least 3-4 times weekly to help with constant growth with athletic performance, recovery of injury, injury prevention, muscle soreness & most importantly better posture as all sports & lifestyle has different demands on the body.
