What is Functional Stretch Therapy(fst)?

What is Functional Stretch Therapy(fst)?

Looking for a stretch session to help with flexibility in your muscles via stretching?
Functional stretch therapy is a form of manual therapy that helps regulate your nervous system from fight/flight, to rest & digest. This form of therapy is employed by a qualified massage therapist who would skillfully apply stretching methods alongside with constant assessments on your soft tissues. This is not to be confused with a massage therapy, but more to what the title suggests, a stretch session, using a neuromuscular approach/ techniques to improve flexibility, blood flow (through blood vessels), joints' range of motion, & overall wellbeing. While there are plenty of stretching & flexibility systems that promise athletes, & people with pain, learn how functional stretch therapy may be the best fit for you.

Is Functional Stretch Therapy Effective?

As with any stretching system like fascial stretch therapy, functional stretch therapy uses a range of techniques that is based on current pain science & neurological feedback for easier release of tissues for clients who experience back pain, injuries, sports injuries, joints aches/ pains, & tight muscle tissue from postural compensations. A stretch study on various type, methods, & techniques on stretching found that specificity choice of stretching is important to the success of any stretch goals for clients with or without pain.
Stretching the muscles around your body by yourself may be stretching you shorter due to the nervous system not being able to regulate itself into relaxation, & functional stretch therapists are trained to help the CNS to not be too excitable so that the body can release the tissues into a deeper stretch.

What does Functional stretch therapy(fst) target?

Functional stretch therapy(fst) targets a range of systems of the human body & it includes:
  • Muscles
  • Fascia
  • Movement patterns
  • Performance
When your body goes through stretches with a therapist that facilitate for more range of motion(movement) in the joints, the muscles naturally follow both superficial & deep fascia stretching which greatly improves the flexibility of your muscles. If you are suffering from acute or chronic pain that has been around for more than one month, the fascia in the affected part of your body will be restricted due to a buildup of collagen which may cause you to experience pain, & cause repetitive injury by repeating a wrong biomechanical stress. During the fst session, the therapist aim is to search out where the highest stress levels on your body are to help decrease pain, by employing neuromuscular techniques to gain deeper stretch.

Functional Stretch Therapy benefits

Functional Stretch therapy(fst) benefits not only the high performing athlete, but extremely useful for a client that wants to:
  • Prevent injury
  • Recover faster from a training session
  • Improve lymphatic system flow
  • Improve Flexibility in muscles
  • Gain better mobility(joint motion)
